GIS Internship with the National Park Service

The George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP), a unit of the National Park Service (NPS) headquartered in McLean, Virginia, will be hiring a full-time GIS student intern this summer. The paid position will be up to 1040 hours and begin in early June 2010.

The student intern will work with the GWMP GIS Office to manage data, create maps of park resources to support park operations, and GPS items throughout GWMP. The student intern will have a great deal of independence to design resource databases, collect data, create maps, and manage workflow.

Other details:
  • The position will require working outside part-time
  • The position will require walking on varied and difficult terrain
  • The position will require wearing a uniform
  • Basic knowledge of ArcGIS and ability to work independently are necessities
  • The position will be paid; but NPS cannot provide housing or other benefits
  • No public transportation available to the job site
  • The position will be hired under the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). Under this hiring program, applicants must be enrolled in school in Fall 2010.
  • Applicants must meet all Federal hiring standards, including U.S. Citizenship
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license
