Student Position with USGS

The U.S. Geological Surveys Eastern Geographic Science Center is seeking a student with general background in GIS and web-applications programming to work with a web applications development group in Reston, Virginia. Work will involve assisting in the development of web-based GIS tools for natural hazard mitigation, ecosystem management, sea level rise assessment, and other USGS science activities. Candidates should ideally have javascript coding skills, experience with one or more popular Javascript libraries, and interest in coding web mapping clients (e.g., Google maps API, OpenLayers). Experience with server-side programming would also be beneficial. A general knowledge of GIS principles and experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) is desirable.

Candidates are eligible for hire under USGS's Student Educational Employment Program if they:

1. Are a student enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking student.
2. Are at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment.
3. Are enrolled as at least a half-time student (or students who have been accepted for enrollment) in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school.
4. Have a satisfactory academic record, 2.0 or better accumulative G.P.A. is required.

Paid Summer Internship at OPIC (Washington, DC)

The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) is seeking undergraduate and gradate interns to work in the Economic Impact Analysis Group of the Office of Investment Policy for focused assignments dealing with geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis.

Location: Washington, D.C.
Duration: Summer 2010 (12 weeks) with commitments of 40 hours per week
Compensation: Paid

· Undergraduate students with at least two full years of college: GS-4, Step 1, $14.59
· Graduate students enrolled in their first year of graduate school: GS-5, Step 1, $16.33

Description: The Overseas Private Investment Corporation, an executive branch agency of the US government, will consider internship applications from highly competitive and flexible undergraduate and graduate students with strong business interests and background in international development.

OPIC is an independent U.S. government agency whose mission is to mobilize and facilitate the participation of U. S. private capital and skills to promote the economic and social development of less developed countries and regions, and countries in transition from non-market to market economies. OPIC assists U.S. companies by providing financing (from large structured finance to small business loans) and political risk insurance, as well as supporting investment funds. OPIC complements the private sector in managing risks associated with foreign direct investment and supports U.S. foreign policy.

OPIC was established as an agency of the U.S. government in 1971 and currently does business in over 150 countries. In the decades since its creation, OPIC has worked to achieve its dual mandate of fostering developmental investment and supporting US investors in challenging markets.

The OPIC Office of Investment Policy (OIP) seeks to recruit undergraduate or graduate interns for its Economic Impact Analysis unit immediately. The internship will last approximately 12 weeks and will be an outstanding opportunity to learn about investment policy, international investment and trade issues within the context of international development and U.S. foreign policy.

The selected candidate will work on the Unit’s effort in mapping OPIC’s global reach and footprint; and be able to display it on a web platform, such as Google Earth or Google Maps. The two main objectives will be to:

(1) create interactive maps on the OPIC intranet and internet website with information about OPIC’s projects around the world and

(2) create features and layers that will enrich the user experience

Experience: Candidates with backgrounds in geography, international studies, or spatial analysis will be considered. Candidates should possess good knowledge of international development issues, strong oral and written communications skills, as well as computer proficiency. Desired skills and experience:

- Excellent Google Maps API skills and experience
- Familiarity with Google Earth Applications and features
- Familiarity with web mapping
- Experience in graphic design, publication design, and web design is a plus
- Ability to work independently
- Must be detail-oriented

GIS Internship with the National Park Service

The George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP), a unit of the National Park Service (NPS) headquartered in McLean, Virginia, will be hiring a full-time GIS student intern this summer. The paid position will be up to 1040 hours and begin in early June 2010.

The student intern will work with the GWMP GIS Office to manage data, create maps of park resources to support park operations, and GPS items throughout GWMP. The student intern will have a great deal of independence to design resource databases, collect data, create maps, and manage workflow.

Other details:

• The position will require working outside part-time
• The position will require walking on varied and difficult terrain
• The position will require wearing a uniform
• Basic knowledge of ArcGIS and ability to work independently are necessities
• The position will be paid; but NPS cannot provide housing or other benefits
• No public transportation available to the job site
• The position will be hired under the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). Under this hiring program, applicants must be enrolled in school in Fall 2010.

Senior Software Developer with NASA Contractor

Summary: Experienced software developer sought to join the staff of INNOVIM, to work on a project at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA/GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. The position calls for software development and Web applications experience.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities: Provide programming, web application development and deployment support for an Earth science data project at NASA/GSFC. This work will encompass:
• Develop and implement a Web service and client to provide data archive interrogation, retrieval and processing services.
• Lead deployment and software testing efforts. Support end-user community.
• Support the existing code base and improve current functionality.
• Fix defects associated with the application and potentially prototype new architectural features.
• Interface with network and system administration staff.
• Author technical documentation such as API and user manual.
