USGS - Intern position
Terms for all positions: Student will work at the USGS National Center in Reston, VA. Student will be paid by requisition contract at an hourly rate as listed in the OPM pricing table for student services. Full or Part-time during summers and school breaks; part-time during school year as negotiated, up to a maximum of 20 hours per week during the school year; 1 year with possibility of extension to two years beyond graduation. Start Spring 2012.
Work Requirements: The student contractor will provide support for the Project’s database development, management, data analysis, and publication activities. The support activities include scanning paper maps, geologic cross-sections, field notes and other data and using spreadsheets to set up inventories of data. The student contractor will use elementary aspects of GIS for geographic registration of map data so that the data can be used by other scientists to develop derivative GIS data layers for digital and more traditional publication formats.
Specific Tasks:
- Scan maps, field notes, and other data.
- Learn the use of elementary GIS software as needed for project activities, including the geographic registration of map data.
- Maintenance of digital data bases, including sorting of records, merging of records, and entering data. Work will involve using spreadsheets and databases to develop inventories.
- The student contractor must be enrolled in a degree program at the University, but does not have to be a US citizen. However, the student must be fluent in English.
- The student contractor must have completed at least 2 years of undergraduate course work by June 2012.
- The student contractor must have the ability to quickly learn and deal with new software, including scanning software and elementary GIS programs.
- The student contractor should have a working knowledge of the major spreadsheet and database programs (for example, Excel, Access.)
- Once guidance has been given on the task at hand, the student contractor will be expected to work independently.

SAIC-Geospatial Analyst

Description:
The candidate will be responsible for the processing of GPS/IMU, LIDAR and EO sensor data from a raw format to final products and disseminations support to the Army Buckeye program in the Afghanistan theater of operation. This entails the processing GPS trajectories, performing cleanup algorithms, registering data, managing data and conducting QA/QC. Provide support and troubleshooting of potential hardware/software issues that might arise. Candidate will work on small cohesive teams, in these theaters as well as on larger teams in the Springfield Office. Selected candidates will be required to perform rotations to theater of operation at a minimum of 4 months per rotation. Longer rotations can be worked out at the candidate’s request. Candidate will have a working understanding of the collection and processing of tactical imagery and LIDAR data. Candidate should have a background in working with military customers and production of products related to the Military Decision Making Process. Should be a self starter that works well with small teams as well as individually.
Candidate must be able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance and pass a redeployment physical.
Qualifications:
REQUIRED EDUCATION/SKILLS: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (four years). The successful candidate will have a minimum of three to five years relevant skill experience including the following: knowledge and experience with digital cartography, image processing, and computer technology; knowledge of geographical information systems, geospatial production techniques, and NGA digital data formats; knowledge of and experience with GIS commercial-off-the-shelf applications software, particularly ESRI ArcGIS, ArcView, ERDAS Imagine/LPS, SOCET SET, etc.

Technical Requests (not requirements):
All National Geologic Map Database citations for geologic maps and related reports on Alaska will be evaluated for inclusion in this project. There are more than 4,000 such reports in the NGMDB, and each report may have many plates. All previously scanned material will be quality checked, and rescanned as needed. Multiple formats of each scan will be created (e.g., high- and medium-res. PDF, TIFF, JPEG), for users to download. Geologic map sheets will be georeferenced and processed into NGMDB’s map viewing and delivery system that is currently under development. This system uses ESRI’s ImageServer application, to provide both WMS and Web browser access to the maps.
Deliverables:
A seamless statewide coverage of current geologic maps (3,000+) in the NGMDB archive that is accessible to the public via a web-mapping interface. Data will also be made available to client side GIS software users via OGC compliant web services.

This student will join an ongoing project investigating the environmental effects of traditional versus novel suburban stormwater management strategies and will initiate work on extending the scope of the project by beginning an economic analysis of the novel stormwater management. The student will be mentored by cooperation of two USGS science centers Eastern Geographic Science Center to provide project and environmental analysis mentoring, and Western Geographic Science Center to provide the mentoring for the economic analyses. The student will work with established partners at Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection and the Montgomery County Planning Department to obtain and organize data and begin a cost benefit analysis of the implementation of the novel stormwater management being used in the county (and being monitored by Eastern Geographic Science Center). The student may also have the opportunity to assist with field and lab analyses to experience both the environmental monitoring aspect as well as the economic aspects of the project.
Work will take place at the USGS National Center in Reston, VA and pay will be based on educational level and experience. The start date is expected to be in mid May 2012 and last through the summer (exact dates are flexible based on the student's academic obligations).
