GIS Technician, Fairfax County

$19.39 – $25.86 an hour

Description:
Under direction from the Department GIS Coordinator, creates, develops, and maintains GIS data, associated attribute information, and metadata. Performs quality control checks on GIS data and attribute information. Utilizes GIS to analyze data and creates presentation quality maps and cartographic material for staff, high-level County officials, and the public. Responsible for undertaking and managing projects with little supervision. Collects field data using GPS, performs data post-processing, and incorporates data into the County’s enterprise GIS. Assists in training and supporting staff in the use of GIS.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Geography or a closely related field, plus 1 year of experience in GIS or cartography. Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures of GIS and strong cartographic skills. Knowledge of ESRI software packages (including ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcPad, and more). Must have a customer service attitude and excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of GIS data layer development and management using ArcView 9.x or higher. ArcSDE version editing, Trimble GPS, and Adobe Illustrator experience a plus. Works well independently and in a team environment.

Schedule:
Full-time position, flexible work schedule. Typical county work day, M-F 8-4:30.

Special Requirements:
Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license, and will be required to do field work as part of a team or independently using a County vehicle.
