WWF needs to produce a series of consistent maps using ArcGIS. Part-time help is sought to assist with:
Mapping biological and social data for several regions following a consistent template and color scheme; summarizing data within regions or defined areas (e.g. amount of tropical forests that are within protected areas); creating and mapping new data (identifying forests at a certain elevation range); organizing, naming data and updating metadata according to defined standards; managing spatial datasets including raster data. Proficiency in ArcGIS essential. Must be organized, able to work independently and be creative. U.S. citizen or valid U.S. work permit (or work/study), NO exceptions. Availability on a part-time basis (very flexible) for the fall semester: September - December, for a total of 100-150 hours.

The focus of this website (http://mrdata.usgs.gov) is to provide single portal access via the Internet to the extensive spatial information holdings of the Mineral Resources Program. To that end, the SID project develops hardware and software methods and tools for serving MRP spatial information using two different technologies which are aimed at different classes of information users: a map-browsing interface for casual users, and a data extraction and download service for stand-alone GIS users. These data are available to government personnel as well as the general public and can be used to construct a wide variety of digital maps and digital data sets.
Because each digital geological database has its own structure, some customization of access and delivery of each database is required. The student contractor will work on elements related to delivering one or two of the databases as well as generating some layers that can be used as base layers in web presentation and data delivery for use in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

The support activities include working with geologists and computer specialists involved with data delivery and presentation. In preparation for the up-coming National Mineral Resource Assessment, this project is working to ensure a stable, robust and up-to-date mineral occurrence database from which data can be extracted readily by a broad spectrum of users.
The student contractor will help project personnel update locations of mineral occurrences using ArcGIS and Google Earth, resolve data duplication issues, and evaluate possible avenues for extracting and displaying data from MRDS for use in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

3. An abbreviated and flattened version of MRDS is currently available to the public through the USGS Mineral Resources Program website: http://mrdata.usgs.gov . The full database is a relational database housed in Oracle, using an interface written in Oracle Application Express, involving primarily HTML, PL/SQL, and JavaScript languages. A major improvement in the use of and access to the full database will be the addition of an interface which allows spatial display, possibly through the development of an ArcGIS ArcSDE Oracle webserver. GIS/Georgraphy Internship
The Department of Agriculture is looking for college students with GIS knowledge to complete a paid internship at their offices in Florida and Wyoming. The opportunity is being offered through the HACU National Internship Program (www.hnip.net ) and is open to all students regardless of their ethnic background. The selected intern will travel to Washington, DC to attend orientation and then to the selected position location to complete the internship. This is a 15-week paid assignment starting on August 21, 2008 and ending the first week of December. Travel to and from the internship location will be covered by the program and the intern will be paid $450 to $550 per week (based on a 40-hour work week) according to class level.

Position may be located in Casper, Wyoming with the Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Office or in the Laramie County FSA Office in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
II. Desired skills:
The incumbent, working at the basic or advanced training level, performs a variety of activities involving the data transfer to new aerial photography and will be involved in data entry of GIS information. The incumbent also works in other programs as assigned. Working under the close supervision of CED or other higher graded employee performs the transferring of data from old to new aerial photography. Such duties include updating all necessary index cards, measuring of acreage, identifying changes in land acreages and properly transferring data. Refers questions and problem matters to a higher graded employee for assistance. The incumbent will also be involved in data entry in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Working under the close supervision of CED or other higher graded employee, the incumbent will data load farm tract, acreage, and crop history information. Refers questions and problem matters to a higher graded employee for assistance. Assists other employees by performing specific, routine segments of broader program operations for which other another employee is responsible. Systems Engineers Needed.
The Geo-Spatial Technologies and Information Division of SAIC located in Springfield, VA, currently has openings for Systems Engineers. Candidate will provide processing support to the Army Buckeye program in Iraq and Afghanistan theaters of operation. Candidate will work on small cohesive teams, in these theaters as well as on larger teams in the Springfield Office. Selected candidates will be required to perform rotations to one or both theaters at a minimum of 4 months per rotation. Candidate will receive a hazard duty pay differential. Candidate will be trained to have a working understanding of the collection and processing of tactical imagery and LIDAR data. Candidate is preferred to have a background in working with military customers and production of products related to the Military Decision Making Process. Should be a self starter that works well with small teams as well as individually. Candidate must be capable of obtaining a Secret security clearance before deploying, be able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance if necessary, and pass a deployment physical.

Students will work with GIS and digital databases on multiple international and domestic projects focusing on environmental characterization and mineral resource assessment studies. They are expected to provide GIS expertise in support of Eastern Mineral Resources Team (EMRT) projects, including, but not limited to database development, management, data analysis, and publication activities. They will work with geologists and geochemists involved with data analysis. Students will use advanced aspects of GIS and will be expected to assist in developing derivative GIS data layers from existing USGS and adjunct digital data for digital and more traditional publication formats. They will also develop information and digital graphics for release in web and paper publication formats.
Specific Tasks for Student Interns
� Build ArcGIS projects incorporating diverse geologic and other thematic data to develop derivative maps and spatial models.
� Use statistical and USGS-developed software as needed for project activities.
� Maintenance of digital data bases, including sorting of records, merging of records, and entering data. Work will involve using spreadsheets and databases. Includes archiving of source data and paper maps
� Advanced GIS manipulations of spatial databases in ArcGIS 9. Editing and synthesizing GIS data to produce digital maps for publication.
� Prepare, analyze, edit and produce research results in accordance with USGS publication quality standards. Creation of graphics used in digital and paper-format publications
