GIS/Georgraphy Internship

The Department of Agriculture is looking for college students with GIS knowledge to complete a paid internship at their offices in Florida and Wyoming. The opportunity is being offered through the HACU National Internship Program (www.hnip.net ) and is open to all students regardless of their ethnic background. The selected intern will travel to Washington, DC to attend orientation and then to the selected position location to complete the internship. This is a 15-week paid assignment starting on August 21, 2008 and ending the first week of December. Travel to and from the internship location will be covered by the program and the intern will be paid $450 to $550 per week (based on a 40-hour work week) according to class level.

Below are the descriptions for these positions:



I. Desired skills:
6 hours coursework directly related to the work of a cartographic/GIS technician or 3 months experience directly related to GIS data digitization, editing, and map production using ArcMAP. Must have car.

Position description:
Use ArcMAP and custom tools to digitize and edit Common Land Unit (CLU) GIS data and generate geographic information system (GIS) maps; develops GIS maps from orthophotos, rough drawings, sketches, GIS data files and verbal instructions; performs finishing edits and quality assurance checks regarding GIS data accuracy; produces maps for final review.



Position may be located in Casper, Wyoming with the Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Office or in the Laramie County FSA Office in Cheyenne, Wyoming.



II. Desired skills:
The incumbent, working at the basic or advanced training level, performs a variety of activities involving the data transfer to new aerial photography and will be involved in data entry of GIS information. The incumbent also works in other programs as assigned. Working under the close supervision of CED or other higher graded employee performs the transferring of data from old to new aerial photography. Such duties include updating all necessary index cards, measuring of acreage, identifying changes in land acreages and properly transferring data. Refers questions and problem matters to a higher graded employee for assistance. The incumbent will also be involved in data entry in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Working under the close supervision of CED or other higher graded employee, the incumbent will data load farm tract, acreage, and crop history information. Refers questions and problem matters to a higher graded employee for assistance. Assists other employees by performing specific, routine segments of broader program operations for which other another employee is responsible. Assignments are designed to provide greater knowledge of County Office operation. Performs other duties as assigned.
